113/1 GEOGRAPHY 1
(For Both School and Private Candidates)
Time: 3 Hours Tuesday, 07 th May 2019 a.m.
Instructions
1. This paper consists of sections A and B with a total of nine (9) questions.
2. Answer a total of five (5) questions; two (2) questions from section A and three (3) questions from section B. Question number one (1) is compulsory.
3. In section A, question number one (1) carries 25 marks and the rest 15 marks, while in section B each question carries 20 marks.
4. Credit will be given for the use of relevant sketch maps and diagrams.
5. Map extract of Tabora (sheet 118/2) is provided.
6. Non programmable calculators may be used.
7. Cellular phones and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the examination room.
8. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer booklet(s).
SECTION A (40 Marks)
Answer question number 1 and any other question from this section.
- Carefully study the map extract of Tabora (sheet 118/2) provided and then answer the following questions:
(a) Find the distance of railway line from Itulu grid reference 837345 to Tabora grid
reference 800456 in kilometer.
(b) Calculate the area covered by seasonal swamps in kilometer square.
(c) Outline two methods which have been used to represent relief of the area.
(d) Giving concrete evidence from the map, identify six human activities taking place in the area.
(e) With evidence from the map, suggest the type of climate.
(f) Explain three factors which led to the presence of seasonal swamps in the mapped area.
- (a) Analyse the major procedures for drawing a sketch map by using survey information.
(b) Describe four survey marking equipments and for each give its uses.
- Explain seven qualities of good research.
- Carefully study the photograph below and then answer the questions that follows:
(a) What type of photograph is this?
(b) With evidence, identify two economic activities which are carried out in the area.
(c) Give four factors which might have influenced the economic activities identified in (b).
(d) Identify two environmental problems which are likely to face the area.
(e) At what time was the photograph taken? Give a reason for your answer.
(f) Comment on the scale of production.
(g) Name the crop shown in the photograph.
(h) Suggest the stage of production of the crop shown in the photograph.
(i) Describe the relief features seen in the photograph.

- (a) Examine six factors which make soil to lose its fertility.
(b) How does soil texture and soil PH influence farming?
- Describe the hydrological cycle and show its link to underground water.
- With the aid of a diagram, describe three zones of the interior of the earth.
- With the aid of a diagram, describe three zones of the interior of the earth.
- Examine six consequences brought by depletion of the ozone layer in the atmosphere.
- Explain four factors for the occurence of earthquake and give its four effects.
