(5) Question Category: Mathematical Calculation

If q∗r =q - 4r, find x given that 3∗(1∗x) = 27.

Answer / Solution

Given 3∗(1∗x) = 27. but
q∗r =q - 4r,
qi∗ri =qi - 4ri,
Let 3=q1, and (1∗x)=r1
also
Let 1=q2, and (x)=r2
starting from inside: by applying q∗r =q - 4r,
3 ∗(1 - 4x)=27 then
3 - 4(1 - 4x) = 27.
3 - 4 + 16x = 27
-1 + 16x = 27 ⇒ 16x = 28
16x/16 = 28/16
∴ From 3∗(1∗x) = 27 the value of x = 7/4.

  1. The variable v varies directly as the square of x and inversely as y . Find v when x = 5 and
    y = 2 ; given that when v = 18 and x = 3 the value of y = 4 .
  2. The temperature (Ti) inside a house is directly proportional to the temperature (To) outside the
    house and is inversely proportional to the thickness (t) of the house wall. If Ti = 32°C when
    To = 24°C and t = 9cm , find the value of t when Ti = 36°C and To = 18°C.
