Rose was talking with her grandmother who believes that the earth`s shape is flat like a table. By using six evidences, describe how Rose will prove to her grandmother that the earth is spherical.

Answer / Solution

The following are evidences that the earth is spherical:

  1. Circumnavigation: when people travel around the Earth in airplanes or ships, they don't fall off the edge. Instead, they come back to their starting point. This is only possible if the Earth is a sphere. During circumnavigation, travelers go east or west and eventually return to the same place, which is consistent with a spherical Earth.

  2. Sunrise and Sunset: The sunrise and sunset at different places of the earth, people in the east see the sun earlier than the people in the west due to earth’s rotation from west to east. If the earth was flat the whole world would have sunrise and sunset at the same time.

  3. Ship`s visibility: If you are in the coast viewing a ship which is very far you will see the soot, then the pipe and eventually the whole ship gradually appears. If the earth were flat the ship would have been seen all at once.

  4. Earth's Shadow on the Moon/ Lunar eclipse: During a lunar eclipse, when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, the shadow cast on the Moon is always round. This round shadow is evidence that the Earth is blocking sunlight in a spherical shape. If the Earth were flat, the shadow on the Moon during a lunar eclipse would look different.

  5. Flight Paths: Rose can explain that airplane flight paths are based on the Earth's curvature. Pilots and navigators use great-circle routes, which are the shortest distance between two points on a sphere. These flight paths wouldn't make sense if the Earth were flat.

  6. Satellite Images/ Aerial photographs: Rose can show her grandmother satellite images of the Earth, which clearly depict a spherical shape. These images are taken from space and provide a comprehensive view of the Earth's curvature. The consistent presentation of a spherical Earth in satellite imagery is strong evidence of its true shape.
