Determination of total alkalinity in the given sample water from the Indian Ocean

Procedure:

  1. 30cm3 of water sample water from the Indian Ocean was pipetted into the 250 cm3 conical flask.
  2. Three drops of phenolphthalein indicator solution was added to the conical flask. The colour of the solution changed to pink.
  3. Then the sample was titrated against 0.02N sulphuric acid solution till the pink colour changed to colourless,
  4. To the same solution in the conical flask, three drops of the mixed indicator solution was added, the colour of the solution changed to blue colour.
  5. The water sample from the Indian Ocean was then titrated against 0.02 N sulphuric acid solution till the solution changed to yellow.
